Like many businesses across the retail sector, the publishing industry has been hit by a raft of doom and gloom in the past few weeks.

The publishing group denied the cuts were linked to a delivery delay of the author Dan Brown’s new manuscript, or to a change of leadership at Random House, its parent company.
