Eli Lilly withdrew its application for approval of the antidepressant Cymbalta as a treatment for chronic pain, after regulators questioned whether the drug was shown to work for that purpose.

The drugmaker posted a loss of $465.6 in the third quarter on a charge of almost $1.5 billion for an expected settlement of investigations into the marketing of its top-selling drug, Zyprexa.

Lilly will record the charge because of investigations into past marketing of its Zyprexa schizophrenia drug and is in advanced talks to resolve the inquiries, the company said.

Eli Lilly agreed to pay $6.5 billion for ImClone Systems, the biotechnology company that is controlled by Carl C. Icahn.

Eli Lilly has agreed to pay $62 million to 33 states to settle claims that it improperly marketed Zyprexa, its top-selling drug.

The bid by Lilly for the biotechnology company beat out an offer from Bristol-Myers Squibb, which markets ImClone’s cancer drug Erbitux in the United States along with ImClone.

The directors of Eli Lilly and ImClone Systems have agreed in principle to Lilly’s acquisition of ImClone for about $6.1 billion.

Eli Lilly’s offering for ImClone Systems would be higher than the hostile $4.7 billion offer that Bristol-Myers Squibb has already made for the shares of ImClone it does not already own.

The Food and Drug Administration has delayed a decision on a blood thinner from Eli Lilly for a second time, raising concerns on Wall Street about the potential blockbuster medication.
